This?

While I am asking questions: is Bombay the city in which a commuter train is always said to be going either "up" or "down"? (And if so, which was is "up"?)

This is not correct either. The last two letters should be connected.

I take it I have the right letters, then? Yes, the two consonants should collapse into a single contraction, but that part of writing in devanagiri seems not to have been programmed for mac. so I guess it will have to do. At any rate, from now on I put it into english as "Achchha."

By the way, the Korean word for "oops." Sounds the same (to me, anyway).

In England, traditionally , you always go "down" to the countryside and "up" to the cities -- particularly the snobby ones (London, Oxford, Cambridge..) I presume they exported this with all their other little class-reinforcement tricks.
